Hilander tracksters finish record-breaking season with second-place finish Burns Track June 11, 2025June 11, 20250 By Ty Volle This has been a historic year for Burns track and field. There have been seven school records and two state records broken on the boys side with another 18 marks falling in the Burns all-time top 10 list. The boys also set five new Eastern Oregon League District records. On the girls side, they broke one school record and had eight top 10 finishes. It really was a season to remember. Last year the boys finished 10th and the girls 22nd at the State meet. However, there was a strong returning senior class this year with a lot of potential to make a run at the state title. Strong returners were Carsen Volle, Canon Winn, Parker Singhose, Lucian Miller, and Tyson Ballard. Then additions of Kale Cornell, Jace Wright, and Owen Kaino at the state meet really made a title shot possible. The boys performed to near perfection at the state meet. This year the boys narrowly missed the State title by one point to Siuslaw and the girls team moved up to 18th in the state. The end of the state meet really ended up being a title fight between David and Goliath. Siuslaw has over 400 hundred kids in their school and 45 boys on their track team. Burns has 24 boys athletes and closer to 200 kids in the school. From the beginning Burns was projected to score 76 points and Siuslaw was projected to score 103. Burns was a 27 point underdog. Events are scored places 1-8 with a descending point allotment of 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1. Day two of the meet started with Burns having 0 team points. The first event was the long jump. Tyson Ballard was ranked 7th, he jumped 21’ 11” to win the event. He scored eight more points than was projected. Next up was the 4×100. The boys team was ranked second based on District meet times. They were racing for not only a State title but the State record. Burns had a previous mark that was only two-hundredths of a second off the record. The Burns Boys ran a 43.16 winning the relay and beating the old state record of 43.29 set by Westside Christian in 2023. Jayce Wright followed up with an eighth place finish in the javelin. Then Tyson Ballard won the high jump state championship and Owen Kaino PR’d and took seventh. Canon Winn took third in the 400m, followed by Carsen Volle and Parker Singhose with a 1-2 finish in the 110 high hurdles. Carsen and Parker then got ready for the 300 meter hurdles where Carsen took home the State championship breaking the old state record by over half a second running a 37.48, the old record was 38.12 from 2006. Parker ran a PR placing fourth giving us another five points. Canon, who was ranked fourth in the pole vault, secured a second place finish with a vault of 14’ 1.25” and a new school record. After all of these performances the boys were leading Siuslaw 80 to 79 in team points with the 4×400 relay to go. Whoever won the relay or placed higher would be the 2025 State Champions There is a game teams play at the District meet where they don’t run their fast teams strategically to score more points at the District meet. Siusalw opted to run their slower team even though their fast team broke the state record this year. Then after the District meet you can opt your runners out of an event at state and run them in the relay. This unfortunately put Siuslaw in the slow heat with their fast team. Siuslaw broke their State record running a 3:22.43 in the first heat of the 3A 4×400. The boys knew that they were racing the clock and they ran a race out in front to near perfection, after Carsens 48.9 third leg, and Canon Winn’s 49.9 he dove across the line at a time of 3:22.64. The finished .21 seconds behind Siuslaw. The Final score was Siuslaw 89 and Burns 88. It was for sure a night to remember. Of course, pulling off a team State Championship would have been better. Burns should be proud of the show these athletes put on at the State meet. This year eight School Records, two State Records, and five EOL records were broken by BHS athletes 1) 200m- Carsen Volle 22.26, he broke a school record set by Phil Teal in 1965 and matched by Harland Yriarte in 1966 2) 110m Hurdles- Carsen Volle 14.83, broke the school record set by Larry Rayne in 1967. He also broke his own EOL District Record running 14.88. 3) 300m hurdles- Carsen 37.48, breaking his own school record set last year, and breaking the State Record of 38.16 set in 2006 by Marshall Ackley. Carsen also broke his own EOL District Record running 39.38. 4) 4×100 Relay- Tyson Ballard, Carsen Volle, Canon Winn, and Kale Cornell 43.16, breaking last year’s 4×100 team school record of 43.91 and the State Record of 43.29 set by Westside Christian in 2023. They also hold the EOL District record running 43.54. 5) 4×400 Relay-Kale Cornell, Lucian Miller, Carsen Volle, and Canon Winn 3:22.64, breaking the school record from last year’s BHS 4×400 team of 3:27.58. They also hold the EOL District record running 3:26.63 6) High Jump- Tyson Ballard 6’ 6.75”, breaking the school record set by Darin Thomas in 2002. This jump also broke the EOL District Record. 7) Pole Vault- Canon Winn 14’ 1.5”, breaking Clint Johnson’s School record of 14’ from 2002. 8) Discus- Caitlyn Horrell 132’ 10”, breaking the old record set by Lizz Hardwick in 1975. 9) On another note Akylah Kaino was able to tie her moms high jump height of 5’3” putting them both in a tie for seventh on the BHS all time list. This is definitely a team that will go down as one of the greatest in BHS history. Thank you to the community for your support this winter with our 50/50 Raffle, where we raised enough money to help get a mat for the long jump runway, repair the Javelin runway, and purchase new warm-ups for the athletes.
