Jack Moss 1930 – 2025 Obituary August 27, 2025August 27, 20250 Jack Moss, age 94, passed away peacefully on Aug. 16, 2025, in Lakeview. Born on Sept. 13, 1930, in New Plymouth, Idaho. Jack lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family. Raised and educated in New Plymouth, Jack graduated with the class of 1949. He was the 11th of 13 children, for James and Elizabeth Moss. His family then moved to Burns, and he enlisted in the United States Navy later that year. He served aboard the USS Bushnell, a submarine tender, during the Korean War. His naval service took him to Guam, Hawaii, and various East Coast ports -requiring multiple passages through the Panama Canal. Though officially a Gunners Mate, Jack proudly served as the ship’s Shopkeeper and cherished every moment of his time as a sailor. Jack’s work ethic was evident from an early age. At just nine years old he began his first paid job herding turkey -an experience he fondly recalled throughout his life. Whether working in the mill until he retired as a Planer Supervisor for the Hines Mill or coaching youth sports, Jack believed that any job worth doing, was worth doing right. He was respected and loved for his leadership and commitment. After relocating to Lakeview, Jack embraced retirement with a new job, walking his beloved little dog, Shortie. In 1970, Jack married Barbara (Maxwell) Moss, blending their family of boys into one loving household. Together they shared 55 years of marriage filled with laughter, partnership and unwavering devotion. A man who loved the outdoors, Jack found joy in water-skiing, camping trips -especially the Maxwell family reunions at Dairy Creek every year- hunting for game and mushrooms, and firewood wherever he went. He was an avid reader and a passionate sports fan who rarely missed a game of football or baseball, or any sport played by his children or grandchildren. Jack dedicated many years to coaching youth sports and umpiring for Babe Ruth leagues and Burns High School games. His presence on the sidelines was a constant source of encouragement for all the young athletes. Jack also enjoyed woodworking and was a proud long-time member of the Elks Lodge in Burns. Known for his warm smile, and kind heart, Jack never hesitated to lend a hand, even when it wasn’t easy for him to do so. He had a gift for making others feel seen and valued, his presence was always felt. Even as he faced health challenges later in life, including Alzheimer’s disease, Jack’s sense of humor remained intact. His love for Barbara never wavered; it was evident to all who saw them together. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach, and above all a man of faith who lived with integrity and heart. Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lakeview; and their five sons: Gary (Dena) Moss of Arizona, Michael Moss of Burns, Shane (Kim) Smith of Tacoma, Hugh (Jennifer) Smith of Newport, and Patrick (Nonie) Moss of Lakeview. His legacy continues through 46 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Numerous brothers and sister’s in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and his loyal companion Shortie. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth Moss; five sisters and seven brothers. At Jack’s request, no formal service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sept. 27, 2025, at 1 p.m., at the home of Jack and Barbara, 233 South G St. There will be military honors at this time, to honor his selfless dedication to our Country.
