Mike Castles 1938 – 2025 Obituary September 24, 2025September 24, 20250 Mike Castles passed away at his home in Burns, on Aug. 8, 2025, surrounded by family members. Mike was born in September 1938 to Paul and Freda (Tucke) Castles in Payette and he grew up in Baker City. Growing up, he attended St. Francis academy and Baker High School. In 1955 Mike joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Helena until his service was completed. After the Navy, he returned to Baker City where he met Patsy Boydstun. They married in 1960 and moved to southern California for work. While in California Mike worked a full-time job and attended college to attain his degree in metallurgy. After 12 years he and Patsy decided to move back to Oregon to be close to family and the rural lifestyle they knew growing up. Even though he worked a lot of hours, Mike was never too busy for his kids. He taught each of them to play softball and coached many of their teams. He was always available to play catch when asked. After his children grew up he spent many hours enjoying his grandchildren and following their activities. Mike was very patriotic and flew the flag in his yard year-round. He and Patsy sponsored the local fireworks and other patriotic efforts. They also were very supportive of local activities for kids in Harney County. Mike was always happy to see kids participating in sports, music, and other activities. Mike was a member of the Elks club for numerous years. He enjoyed Wednesday nights at the club visiting with his brother and friends. Mike is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Don) Stam of Ontario and Sammie (Mike) Masterson of Hines; son-in-law, Dave Turner of Burns; his brother, Leroy Castles of Burns; and sister, Betty (Rod) Hillman of Baker City; his grandchildren, Travis Turner, Allie Taylor, Anna Masterson, Tyler Stam, and Jay Masterson; and great-granddaughter, Lily Taylor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Castles; daughter, Vikki Turner; parents, Paul and Freda Castles. At Mike’s request there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers, you are encouraged to make a donation to a local charity.
