Susan Leslie Shields 1947 – 2025

Susan Leslie Shields entered eternal rest at the age of 78 on Nov. 15, 2025 in Harney County Oregon.

She was born on June 27, 1947, in San Rafael, Calif., to David and Fredna Shields.

Susan was raised with her two sisters, Sandy and Sharon in San Rafael until 1960 when the family relocated to San Lorenzo, Calif. She Graduated from Arroyo High School in 1965 and attended Chabot College to study Data Entry.

She worked for Pacific Bell in many capacities, from Human Resources to Engineering and Telecommunications in Oakland, San Francisco, Napa, and San Ramon, Calif., from where she retired, She also worked for a couple financial companies post-retirement.

Susan loved to travel with our cousin Betty. They went to the New England states, New Orleans, Arkansas, Mexico and Canada. After visiting Canada, Susan decided to move there, but returned home after three years.

She was an active member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, which she loved.

Susan’s heart was pure and golden. She quit her job around 2006 to take care of our Mom who had Alzheimer’s. She did this for five years which was very tough on her, but she did it proudly with lots of love.

She lived a full life, loved living in the City with all her friends, but loved being with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She had a big part in raising each one of them. They all called her Auntie Suzie or just Auntie. She was so invested in these kids that she would try to attend every ball game, performance, fair or activity that they were involved in. If there was a performance that they were in, she just didn’t see it the one time, she saw it every time it showed. That was Auntie Suzie! In 2017, she packed up and moved to Oregon to help her nephew Matt and his two young sons. She was Auntie Suzie to many other children including neighbors, friends and cousins. She enjoyed and cherished her time as a Nanny to many children and was very influential in their lives from infancy to graduation and marriage. She kept in close touch with them all through the years.

Susan was a person that would drop everything to help anyone that needed it. She loved people! She could walk into a room full of strangers and without hesitation, she would strike up a conversation and become friends with them. She simply inspired us all with her kindness, her caring, and her love of humanity. She believed that our world should just coexist with open arms.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, David and Fredna Shields.

She is survived by her sisters, Sandra (the late, Michael) Richards, Sharon (Christopher) Fierro. Her nieces and nephews: Michelle (Shaun) Steinbeck, Matthew Richards, Joseph Fierro, and Patricia Fierro and her great nephews, Jacob Steinbeck, Mitchel Steinbeck, Nathan Steinbeck, Maxwell Richards, and Jeffrey (Gwen) Richards.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Harney County CAN Cancer, The Women’s HOPE Shelter of Harney County , Harney County Home Health or any other organization of your choice in Susan’s name.

In honor of Susan’s request there will not be a service, her wishes will be carried out by her loving family.

We are all so very heartbroken that our sister and auntie left us. We are all better people for knowing her, and for having her presence in each of our lives. There will never be another one like her! As it has been said many times over “everyone needs an Auntie Suzie” and boy we were extremely blessed to have ours!!!
