Burns opens season with 33-7 win over Sisters

Mick Winn rushed for 129 yards and four touchdowns to lead Burns to a 33-7 season opening non-conference victory over Sisters on Friday, Aug. 31.

After forcing the Outlaws to punt on the game’s opening possession, the Hilanders’ first offensive drive started at their own 38. Cade Maupin finished off the eight-play drive with a 15-yard scoring run, and then Winn added the extra point kick to put Burns up 7-0 with 5:13 to play in the first quarter.

The Burns defense held once again, forcing Sisters to punt, but the Outlaws caught a break when the short kick bounced off a Hilander and Sisters recovered at their own 35-yard line.

The Burns defense was unfazed however, and Sisters went three-and-out, with the Hilanders taking over at their own 37 after the punt.

Burns put together a 10-play, 63-yard drive, with Winn scoring his first TD of the night on a nine-yard run. The extra point kick by Winn was good, and Burns led 14-0 with just under six minutes left in the half.

The Outlaws cut the lead to 14-7 with 38 seconds left in the half as Taylor Fendall threw to Korbin Sharp for a five-yard score, and Wyatt Hernandez kicked the extra point.

Burns received the second half kickoff and started their drive at their own 26. The Hilanders marched down the field in six plays, that included runs of 21 and 38 by Winn and Josh Reagle, respectively, and increased their lead to 20-7 on a 19-yard run by Winn with 8:23 left in the third quarter.

Burns took over at their own 44 following another punt by the Outlaws, and another six-play drive culminated in a scoring run by Winn, this one covering three yards. Winn connected on the extra point kick, and Burns led 27-7 with 4:04 left in the quarter.

Winn finished off the scoring with a 35-yard TD run with 4:12 left in the game as the Hilanders celebrated their first win of the 2018 season.

Winn completed two of seven passes for 27 yards while rushing for 129 yards and four scores on 21 attempts. Reagle had 78 yards on 12 carries, and Maupin finished with 56 yards and one score on four carries before leaving the game with an injury. Justin Winn added four yards on one rush, Zane Taylor picked up 34 rushing yards on two attempts, and Brock McKinney had nine yards on one carry.

Maupin caught one pass for 17 yards and Harlan Gunderson had one reception for 10 yards.

The Burns defense held Sisters to 96 yards total offense, including just five yards on the ground.

Fendall was nine-of-14 passing for 91 yards, while the Outlaws leading rusher, Gator Haken, picked up just 15 yards on eight carries.

The Hilanders continue with their non-conference schedule Friday, Sept. 7, when they host Lakeview at Corbett Memorial Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
