Nampa Christian takes title at Burns tournament

The Nampa Christian (Idaho) Trojans took home the championship trophy from the Burns Invitational Volleyball Tournament held Saturday, Sept. 8, at Burns High School.

The Trojans defeated Baker 3-0 in the finals to claim the title.

The Burns Hilanders went 2-1 in pool play, and 1-1 in bracket play.

The Hilanders opened the tournament with a 25-16, 25-8 victory over Ontario.

Burns finished with 15 kills in the match, led by Allie Hueckman with seven. Kaiden Raif had three aces and nine assists in the match, and Hueckman was the team leader in digs with six.

Burns then took on Lakeview and won the match, 25-12, 25-10.

Hueckman again was again the team leader in kills with nine, and Mariah Atencio added six. Rebecca Banks had a good game at the service line, notching five of the team’s 10 aces. The Hilanders recorded 23 digs, led by Fawntana Freitag with six and Hueckman with five. Raif led the team in assists with 18.

In their third and  final match in pool play, Burns lost to Nampa Christian, 18-25, 15-25.

Atencio finished with six kills and three blocks, Hueckman had six kills and six digs, Jenna Garner added 10 digs, and Raif finished with five digs and 15 assists, and Freitag had six digs.

In the first round of bracket play, Burns defeated Nyssa, 25-12, 26-24.

The Hilanders knocked down 21 kill shots, led by Hueckman with seven, and Atencio and Garner with four each. Kaitlyn Wright accounted for four aces, and Garner added four. Atencio led the team in blocks with four, Garner recorded 11 of the team’s 38 digs, and Raif had 19 assists.

Burns faced Baker in their final match of the day, losing in three sets, 19-25, 25-23, 7-15.

Atencio finished with eight kills, eight digs, and five blocks, Hueckman added four kills, and 14 digs, Wright had six blocks and one kill, Garner two kills and four blocks, Hallie SkunkCap 14 digs, and Raif 15 assists.

Burns will open league play on Thursday, Sept. 13, when they host Nyssa.

The Burns volleyball team picked up a non-conference win by beating La Pine in three sets on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at La Pine High School.

The Hilanders won the first set 25-15, outlasted the Hawks 27-25 in the second set, and finished the match with a 25-20 victory.
