Joseph “Joe” Luther Steeves 1936-2019

Joseph “Joe” Luther Steeves passed away on March 26.

Joe was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Ferndale, Calif., to Luther and Alice Steeves. He graduated from Marshfield High School in 1954, and on June 22 of that year, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After the Marines, Joe attended Oregon State University, where he met the love of his life, Mary Kay Humphreys.

Joe and Mary Kay married Dec. 29, 1958, and shared more than 60 beautiful years together. They were blessed with three boys, Phil, Chuck, and John; three daughters-in-law, Ann, Tina, and Kris; one sister-in-law; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two grandchildren-in-law.

Joe and Mary Kay moved to Burns in 1994, where they retired, made many friends, and enjoyed time with their grandchildren. Joe loved hunting, fishing, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a warm man, a kind father, and a loving grandfather. His marriage to Mary Kay was an example of love, patience, kindness, and laughter. He was quick with an infectious smile or joke, and his mischievous sense of humor will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jackie.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Holy Family Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Holy Family Catholic Church. A graveside service will be held after the service with military honors. All who would like to come and celebrate his life are welcome to attend. Contributions in Joe’s memory may be made to the Marines’ Toys For Tots and can be mailed to LaFollette’s Chapel, P.O. Box 488; Burns, Oregon 97720.
