F.H. “Bud” Garland 1936-2019

Bud Garland, 83, passed away suddenly at his home on June 7.

Bud was born in Burns to Erskine and Francis (McVay) Garland, joining his brother, Don. His father was killed in a mill accident in 1944, when Bud was just 8 years old. Bud and his brother had to grow up quickly and help out when, six months later, they welcomed Linda Kay.

Bud graduated from Burns High School and attended OIT in Klamath Falls on an athletic scholarship. He married Kay Dalton, his high school sweetheart. Their oldest daughter, Debbie, was born in Klamath Falls.

Back in Burns, Bud and Kay purchased an independent insurance agency in 1963. Shortly after, Bud received his real estate license and was self-employed from then on. They also owned Dalton Distributing, a family-owned business for many years. Two more daughters were born, Tami and Heidi.

Bud was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt, golf, and snowmobile. He raised alfalfa and quarter horses on his ranch. Kay and the girls all participated.

Bud was Jaycee’s president, chamber of commerce board president (where he received the boss of the year award with his wife, Kay), a past master of Masonic Lodge, and a Harney County Shriner. He was also Grand Marshal of the Harney County Fair and Rodeo, where he served for more than 21 years in various positions, to name some of his contributions to the county. Bud was also in the Oregon National Guard.

Bud and Kay donated to the community the land where the Aspens Assisted Living facility is located.

Bud is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kay; daughters, Tami Surplus and Heidi Thompson; son-in-law, Pat Thompson; grandson, Jay Trost (who Bud and Kay raised from middle school); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Kay Rove; brother, Don Garland; sister-in-law, Kathy Garland; stepfather, Roman Yriarte; special cousin, Lonnie McVay; sister-in-law, Sonja Binder; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Trost; and special cousin, Kenny McVay.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Harney County Fair Board or to Kids Club of Harney County.
