Are you ready for some Fourth of July fun? Abundant activities are planned in Harney County to ensure that your Independence Day celebration is brighter than a firework!

Get your day off to a sweet start by purchasing some Lion Balls from the Burns Lions Club. The club is setting up shop at the Arrowhead Plaza, which is located on North Broadway Avenue in downtown Burns, at 8 a.m. A local favorite that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth, these delicious dough balls are deep fried and coated in cinnamon and sugar.

The athletically inclined can rise and shine at the Firecracker 5K fun run and walk at the Hines Park Pavilion. Race-day registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race gets under way at 9 a.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit Burns High School runners who are attending Steens Mountain Running Camp.

Following the 5k, a patriotic parade will be held in downtown Burns, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on North Broadway Avenue.

If all that excitement has your tummy rumbling, head down to the Crossroads Ranch property at the end of South Broadway Avenue for a free hamburger or hot dog barbecue and family fun day. Hosted by Crossroads Ranch in partnership with Kintsugi Disability Support Network, the barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and everyone is invited to attend.

If you’re on the move and in the mood for food, check out the Burns Paiute Tribe’s “barbecue on the go” fundraiser in downtown Burns. This mouthwatering meal will include barbecue pork ribs, corn on the cob, and your choice of coleslaw or potato salad. Proceeds will benefit the Burns Paiute Social Gathering that will be held in October.

Are you ready to rock? Grab your picnic blanket and/or lawn chairs and swing by Steens Mountain Brewing Company (353 W. Monroe in Burns) from 6-9 p.m. to catch local band Apparition and From Worlds Alike of Nashville, Tenn. There’s no cover charge for this concert, and minors are welcome to attend.

The day’s activities will end with a bang at dusk near the Harney County Fairgrounds, as the Kiwanis Club of Burns-Hines is hosting the annual fireworks display.

If you’re searching for somewhere to watch the show, consider Bosch’s Big Bear Lodge. Located at 171 Hines Logging Road in Hines, the lodge will begin selling hamburgers, hot dogs, and ribs outside at 6 p.m. This is in addition to the full service that will be available inside the lodge, starting at 11 a.m. Leave your fireworks and outside food and drinks at home, but be sure to bring your lawn chairs. While you’re waiting for the fireworks to start, you can enjoy a game of horseshoes or cornhole on the lodge’s lawn.

If you don’t get your fill of fun on the fourth, keep the party going with Central Pastime on Saturday, July 6, at 5 p.m. Located at 211 N. Broadway Avenue in Burns, the second annual Independence Weekend Parking Lot Party will offer fun for the whole family. The event will feature live music, a disc jokey, and children’s activities. There is no cover charge for children younger than 12.

However you plan to observe the holiday, remember to keep your celebration legal and safe. Happy Fourth of July!
