Hilanders shut out Hawks 20-0

The Burns football team improved to 3-0 on the year by blanking La Pine 20-0 in non-conference action on Friday, Sept. 20, at Corbett Memorial Field.

Following a scoreless first half, the Hilanders drove deep into Hawks’ territory on their first possession of the third quarter, but ended turning the ball over on downs at the La Pine 8-yard line.

Burns got the ball right back when Dawson Williams intercepted a Riley Pinckney pass, giving Burns a first down at the Hawks’ 29. The Hilanders’ Jaden Tiller then connected with Justin Winn for a 29-yard touchdown pass. William Johnson added the extra point kick, giving Burns a 7-0 lead.

With a little over four minutes left in the game, Dakota Ceja got loose for a 47-yard TD run, and Johnson added the kick, putting Burns up 14-0.

Johnson came up with an interception on La Pine’s next possession, setting up the Hilanders with a first-and-goal at the La Pine 10. Mick Winn barreled in from the 1, giving Burns a 20-0 lead with 3:41 to play.

The Burns defense held La Pine to 146 yards total offense and forced five turnovers.

Tiller completed 10 of 20 passes for 122 yards with one TD and one interception.

Ceja rushed for 80 yards on 16 carries with one score, and Tiller added 57 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

J. Winn caught five passes for 80 yards and one score.

With the loss, La Pine dropped to 2-1 on the season.

Burns plays another non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 27, when they host the Lost River Raiders. The Raiders are 2-1, and coming off a 29-28 victory over Grant Union on Sept. 21.

The Burns-Lost River contest kicks off at 7 p.m. at Corbett Memorial Field.
