Crane girls take over top spot with win over St. Paul

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the last two unbeaten 1A girls basketball teams met at Bend High School to decide who should hold the No. 1 ranking.

The No. 2-ranked Crane Mustangs took their 14-0 record into the contest to face the top-ranked, 18-0 St. Paul Buckaroos. St. Paul was not only unbeaten this year, their winning streak was at 48 games and counting after finishing 30-0 and winning the 1A title last year.

After trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs got their offense untracked, outscoring St. Paul 21-13 for a 33-25 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw Crane up their lead to 50-37, and the Mustangs finished off the game on a 14-12 run.

Kelsie Siegner finished with 17 points for the victors, Riley Davis and Shelie Doman added 13 apiece, and Dani Clark finished with 11.

The Mustangs return to the court on Friday, Jan. 31, when they play at Dayville/Monument.

The Crane girls basketball team upped their league record to 3-0 with decisive victories over Harper Charter on Thursday, Jan. 23, and Four Rivers on Friday, Jan. 24.

The Mustangs dominated Harper Charter from the outset, leading 32-1 after the first quarter and 43-5 at the break.

The second half saw Crane outscore the Hornets 27-3 to pick up the win.

Siegner had 15 for Crane, Taelor Hammack 12, Davis 10, and Laurel Witzel and S. Doman eight each.

The following day, Crane rolled over Four Rivers 83-24.

The Crane girls basketball team improved to 12-0 on the season with a dominant 66-21 non-conference victory over South Wasco on Monday, Jan. 20, at Crane Union High School.

Five Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Siegner with 18. Davis finished with 11, and Clark, S. Doman, and Risa Thompson each had 10.

Crane pretty much put the game out of reach in the first eight minutes of play, going up 25-1.

In the second quarter, Crane added to their lead and went into the locker room at halftime with a 41-4 advantage.

The Mustangs outscored the Redsides 25-17 in the second half to pick up the lop-sided win.

Rounding out the scoring for Crane were Leslie Doman and Witzel with three apiece, and Hammack with one.
