On Monday, Sept. 14, the Burns Paiute Tribe held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Yapa Subdivision Project.

The project consists of building eight new home sites. It is hoped that four of them will be finished by the end of this year.

The housing project was initially proposed in 2009, but it was set aside for several reasons. In 2018, a committee was formed to continue the process.

The Tribe worked with Indian Health Services, Business Oregon, and Meyer Memorial Trust to secure funding and other aid for the project.

Twila Teeman, a member of the committee, noted that the project is a boon, as no new homes have been built on the Burns Paiute Reservation for about 17 years. Eric Hawley added that housing is a priority for the Tribe.

Harney Rock & Paving, Sisul Engineering of John Day, and Indian Health Services are working on the project.
