Safeway raises funds to feed local families

The local Safeway staff distributed nearly 100 turkey dinners to Harney County families in front of the Burns store on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

For the past several weeks, Safeway in Burns has been fundraising to buy dinners for local families. More than $12,000 was raised for the event.

Thanks to the generosity of community members, on Nov. 24, Safeway was able to partner with the local food bank and contribute a total of 201 dinners to Harney County families.

The local Safeway staff distributed nearly 100 turkey dinners to Harney County families, in front of the Burns store on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Slater Elementary school received 50 dinners as part of the total raised, and the Burns Paiute tribal community received 60 dinners.

Safeway manager JJ Martinez said, “In such a strange year filled with uncertainty and divide, we are incredibly proud of our team for working so hard and feel so blessed to be part of such a giving community. We will continue asking for donations so that we can feed local families for Christmas as well!”
