Harney County Health District is tobacco free

A map of Harney County Health District’s property.

To promote the health and wellness of our patients, visitors, and employees, Harney County Health District adopted a tobacco-free policy that prohibits smoking, vaping, chewing, or using any other tobacco products within health-district property boundaries. This includes Harney District Hospital (HDH), HDH Family Care, NewSun Energy & Harney District Hospital Specialty Care (opening soon), and all other health-district owned buildings, grounds, parking lots, and vehicles.

Patients and employees who use tobacco will be offered information about tobacco cessation resources as well as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (if medically appropriate). Kits will also be available for patients and visitors to help curb their cravings while visiting our healthcare facilities.

While we encourage no tobacco use, the health district will not monitor off-property tobacco use or use of tobacco in personally owned vehicles. Those who choose to use tobacco products will be asked to dispose of product waste in their personally owned vehicles. Hospital inpatients who choose to leave the property to use tobacco products are choosing to leave the facility against medical advice, and this will be noted in their medical record. It should also be noted that all bordering healthcare organizations are smoke-free properties. This includes Allegiant Integrative Medicine, Burns Dental Group, Harney County Health Department, and Harney County Home Health and Hospice. We ask that our patients, visitors, and employees respect our neighboring organizations by refraining from smoking or vaping on their properties as well.

Implementing a tobacco-free property policy is just one of the many ways that Harney County Health District is working to promote health and wellness in our community. We sincerely appreciate our patients, visitors, and employees for their support and cooperation in keeping our property tobacco free.
