After weeks of practicing in the cold, snow, and ice this past month, the Burns High School football program was finally able to play its first game since the playoffs in November 2019.

With a low turnout this year related to COVID-19 and school attendance, a JV team was basically the only option to play the upcoming season. Twenty-three players made the trip to Nyssa Monday, March 15 and won in convincing fashion, 34-0.

With a mixture of two seniors, six juniors, four sophomores, and 11 freshmen, the Hilanders put together a strong running game to offset the 20-plus mph winds blowing during the game. Burns finished the day with 289 total yards on offense and 266 on the ground.

Senior quarterback Justin Winn scored early in the first quarter on an 11-yard run to put Burns up 6-0. The two-point conversion failed.  Burns went up 12-0 on its next possession when junior receiver Dalhton Proffit scored on a 20-yard reverse. The conversion attempt failed again. Another Proffitt touchdown run of 15 yards with only 36 seconds left before halftime gave Burns a three-touchdown lead. Freshman running back Owen Graham ran in the conversion, and the score was 20-0. The Hilanders would add one more touchdown run in the third quarter by sophomore running back Hunter Kemper of 48 yards and a 4th-quarter run by O. Graham of 11 yards. A two-point  conversion pass from Justin Winn to freshman receiver Kempton Peasley-Richardson finished off the scoring.

Winn finished the day with 112 yards rushing with one touchdown on five carries, Kemper rushed for 84 yards with one touchdown on four carries, Hazen Johnson picked up 55 yards on five carries, Proffit carried the ball twice for 35 yards, and O. Graham finished with 25 yards, one touchdown on four carries.

Winn went 1 of 3 for 17 yards, and freshman Leon Dave went 1 of 1 for six yards.

Garrett Goss-Bodily and Winn led the team in tackles with eight each, Kemper added six, and Corbett Graham finished with five. Goss-Bodily also had five tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks.

The Hilanders’ next game is against the Vale Vikings in Burns on Monday, March 29 at 5 p.m.
