Hitting the Jackpot: Youth win big at cattle show

Held Saturday, July 17 at the Harney County Fairgrounds, the Jackpot Show offered youth an opportunity to exhibit their market and breeding beef projects. The show was open to local youth as well as those from outside the county. Thanks to generous donations from multiple sponsors, the winners took home valuable cash and physical prizes. Organizers hope to make the show an annual event. 

On Saturday, July 17, the Harney County Fairgrounds hosted a Jackpot Show for youth to exhibit their market and breeding beef projects.

The show was open to Harney County youth as well as youth from out of the area.  

By all accounts, it was a great day, and organizers hope to make this an annual event. There were a total of 49 entries, including 33 steers and 16 heifers.

The Champion Steer award, which included a $500 cash prize and belt buckle, went to Cash Mast. The Reserve award, with a $250 cash prize, went to Lynzee Storey.

The Champion Heifer award, with a $500 cash prize and belt buckle, went to Hunter Ball. The Reserve award, with a $250 cash prize, went to Chase Comingore.

The Harney County Champion market beef award, with a $250 cash prize and metal cutout, went to Trevyn Nelson for his market heifer. Nelson also earned the Reserve award for his steer, which came with a $150 cash prize.

Michael Froman won the Harney County Champion breeding award, which included a $250 cash prize and metal cutout. Kylee Mellema won the Reserve award with a $150 cash prize.

Thanks to many generous sponsors, event organizers were able to pay cash prizes to every division winner in the show. In addition to awarding physical prizes, the show paid $3,650 among the participants in added prize money!

• Kubota — $50 and a set of gloves for each winner in the showmanship divisions;

• Robbins Equipment — $50;

• Bare Bones Convenience Store — $50.
