Hilanders crowned OSAA 3A Volleyball State Champions

The Burns Hilander volleyball team defeated Sutherlin High School for the state championship title.

The Burns Hilander volleyball team defeated Sutherlin High School for the state championship on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Corvallis High School in four sets 17-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-9.

The Hilanders overcame a slow start to the first set, where the Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders. However, Burns quickly regrouped, settled down, and came together.

Kaitlyn Wright led the team with 17 kills, with Mackenzie King racking up 15, Akylah Kaino adding nine, and Caitlyn Horrell contributing six.

Kaya Dobson led the Hilanders with 100 percent serve.

Kaino led with eight blocks, Horrell added three, King and K. Wright finished with two, and Klaire Theall had one.

Macy Temple led all girls with 19 digs. K. Wright and King finished with 13 apiece, Dobson added nine, and Ashley Wright had four.

A. Wright finished with 34 of the team’s 40 assists.

The Hilanders collected their eighth official state title and ended the season 29-3 with an 18-game winning streak. 

Burns loses only two girls to graduation, Kaya Dobson and Kaitlyn Wright. 

Senior Kaitlyn Wright and Sophomore Mackenzie King were selected to the 3A All-Tournament Team.
