VETERAN Howard Wayne Sargent 1935 – 2021

Howard Wayne Sargent was born February 8, 1935, and passed away on Dec. 2, 2021 in Gorham, Maine. His parents were Milford Merton Sargent, (Cy), and Melissa Abigail, (Abby), (Hersey) Sargent.

He graduated from Porter High School and then attended University of Maine at Orono where he majored in Agriculture. After one year, he served in the United States Army. He then enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Oriental Studies in 1959.

While attending University of Minnesota, he met Helen J. Dunten, from Drewsey. They were married on Dec. 19, 1959 in Burns. Howard re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and he was stationed in Okinawa. He was stationed there when his daughter, Katherine Leandra was born on March 5, 1962. \

After his tour of duty, Howard worked for the United States government as an employee for the Department of Defense. His son, Andrew D. Sargent was born on June 23, 1966. The family moved to Taiwan when Andrew was six weeks old and lived there for a year while Howard attended the United States Language School as a civilian.

Back in the mainland, Howard continued to work for the government’s Department of Defense and attended American University where he received his Master’s Degree in Oriental Studies. When Katherine was in second grade, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where Howard attended University of Chicago to work on his PHD.

Helen and the children moved back to Drewsey so Andrew could “learn how to read” as he started first grade in 1972. Howard accomplished his goal in 1974, receiving his PHD in Asian Studies. Howard also moved west to California where he attended culinary school and received his chef title. He then returned to his home state of Maine where he worked in numerous restaurants as a chef.

Howard was an avid reader, reading many genres of books, from science fiction to documentaries, to historical fiction. He shared that love of reading by providing many books to his children, nieces and nephews, and grandchildren, often accompanied by book reviews of his own and/or clipped from published articles.

He was also an accomplished chef, both cooking for his family and friends and employed as such by many restaurants. He shared this love with future “chefs” by sending many cookbooks and recipes, also complete with personal critiques and helpful hints.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Katherine L. Tracy and husband Baron, of Drewsey; son, Andrew D. Sargent and wife Terri, of Fallbrook, Calif.; granddaughters, Carolann and Katherine, Tracy and Jaycee Sargent; grandsons, Tyler and Austin Sargent; and great-grandson, Mason Howard Tracy; sisters, Gail Metcalf and Barbara Bennett and husband Joe; nieces, Patricia Hayes and Ray Austin; Linda Ripley; and nephews, Michael Metcalf and Dian Zlenki; Robert Bennett and wife Karen; and good friends, Roger Metcalf and Tony Hayes. Special thanks to Patricia, Ray, Michael and Tony for all the loving care provided to Howard.
