Primary Election update

Tuesday, March 8 is the filing deadline for the Primary Election in Oregon.

The following individuals have filed for election for positions in Harney County:

— County Judge—

Pete Runnels, Bill Hart, and Chris Wiseman

— County Commissioner Position No. 2 —

Patty Dorroh and Toni Foster

— County Treasurer—

Bobbi Jo Heany

Each of these positions are nonpartisan.

Under Oregon’s Constitution, the nonpartisan office of county treasurer must be elected during the General Election. Therefore, that position will not appear on the Primary ballot. Instead, it will be forwarded to the General Election in November.

The positions of county judge and commissioner may be elected during the Primary Election. If one candidate receives a majority of the vote, that candidate will be elected.

If no candidate receives a majority (50 percent plus 1 vote) during the Primary Election, the top two candidates will move forward to November. The last day to register to vote (if you have not already been registered) for the Primary Election is April 26.

The Primary Election in Oregon is May 17. Ballots will be in the mail on April 28. Beginning this year, postmarks count on returned ballots. Ballots must be postmarked no later than election day. Keep in mind, this means election results will not be complete on election day, as elections offices await receipt of ballots returned by mail.
