Sign up for summer reading on June 3

Are you looking for exciting ways to keep your kids engaged and entertained this summer?

Bring them to Harney County Library throughout June and July for the summer reading program.

Kids of all ages (from birth through high school) are welcome to join the fun! Registration will be held Saturday, June 3 from 12-4 p.m. at the library (80 West D Street in Burns). Kids will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.

If you cannot make it to the library on June 3, you may email your children’s names, ages, T-shirt sizes, and your phone number to kidsread@harneycountylibrary.org or register online at www.harneycountylibrary.org/summer.

The library has a great schedule of programs following this year’s theme: Read Beyond the Beaten Path.

Sing around the campfire with the Old Time Fiddlers. Learn about plants that grow on Steens Mountain. Participate in an archaeological dig. Play games, learn yarn and leathercraft, and, of course, have a lot of water fun. Discover reptiles, juggling, and magical ventriloquism with our special performers. There’s going to be so much to do! Pick up a schedule at the library or check us out online.

Reading, of course, is a very important part of the program. There will be weekly prize drawings for all participants who keep track of their reading time and grand prizes for top readers in each age category.

Studies show that students who participate in public library summer reading programs score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year. Participants also increase their enjoyment of reading and are more motivated to read.

When you sign your children up for the summer reading program, be sure to tell them how much fun they’re going to have, but smile to yourself knowing how much the program will benefit all of you!
