The Crane Mustangs opened the 2022 football season on the road with a fourth-quarter, come-from-behind win over the Myrtle Point Bobcats, 44-42, at Dufur High School on Saturday, Sept. 3.

Carter Nichols scored on a an 11-yard run with 3:14 left in the game to tie the score. He then ran in the 2-point conversion for the go ahead points. The defense helped seal the game, forcing the Bobcat offense to turn over the ball on downs with 54 seconds left in the game.

The Mustangs appeared to be in control of both sides of the ball most of the game, but penalties and special team mistakes helped keep the Bobcats close. Myrtle Point scored three special team touchdowns on the afternoon.

After the game, head coach Stub Travis said, “I was happy with the win, but emphasized the need to clean up the penalty situation and work on special team situations. We had too many penalties that would give them first downs. The defense played well considering penalties and giving up the special team touchdowns.”

The Mustangs racked up 377 total yards of offense, with Jared Zander throwing for 175 yards on 10 completions. Carter Nichols carried the ball 17 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Crane next travels to Ridgeview High School in Redmond on Thursday, Sept. 8, for a 6 p.m. kickoff against the Dufur Rangers.
