The city of Hines welcomed Trysten Luelling as the newest officer for the Hines Police Department.

City Administrator Kirby Letham and Police Chief Ryan DeLange said they are thrilled that Luelling joined the force.

Luelling — who has been a resident of the Burns and Hines area since he was born — said, “I come from a humble upbringing being raised with an agricultural background, whether it be tending to cattle or baling hay. When I was 18, I decided the best path to take in life would be to join the United States Marine Corps.”

At an early age, Luelling was introduced to the life of a ranch hand, and he quickly learned that it’s not just a job, but a lifestyle.

He said, “I remember my parents working long days, often starting before the sun was up and working until the sun was setting to ensure that everything that needed to be done was done. My two sisters and I had the opportunity to be able to be there for a good deal of everything that went on living on the ranch. Although my parents had worked long hours, they still made time to spend with us children and would help us with schoolwork if we needed help.”

When he left to join the service, Luelling endeavored to better himself and those around him, and that’s what he did.

“I learned a lot while serving as a combat engineer in the Marines,” Luelling said. “Later, reaching the highest rank I could in my first term of enlistment (corporal), I was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps. Achievement Medal for outstanding performance both on and off duty. I left the Marines as a squad leader with the knowledge that I helped countless Marines better themselves, both as a Marine and as a person.”

Like many other Harney County residents, Luelling enjoys the great outdoors.

“I grew up spending what time I could in the outdoors hunting and fishing and even just hiking and exploring new areas,” he said. “I like meeting new people and learning whatever I can about new subjects. I’m particularly fond of learning about history and culture.”

Please join the city of Hines in welcoming Luelling to the Hines Police Department.
