Hilander softball takes down Yamhill-Carlton in extra innings at Vale

Mackenzie King threw the last three innings against Union in a 17-5 win.

Merissa Medley went two for three in a 2-1 victory against Yamhill-Carlton.

In a rematch of last year’s 3A softball championship, the Hilanders once again took down Yamhill-Carlton, 2-1, on March 29, at Vale High School.

The Tigers were scheduled to play in Burns that day, but poor field conditions forced the Hilanders to move the game to the closest field that was available.

The Hilander girls struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when Mackenzie King grounded out, scoring one run to take the lead, 1-0. The Tigers were able to even up the score in the top of the third, 1-1.

Both teams were held scoreless, sending the game to extra innings. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Merissa Medley’s sac fly scored one run to seal the win for the Hilanders.

Ayla Davies earned the win for Burns, throwing all eight innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out 11 batters and walking one.

Burns managed six hits on the day, with Medley and Ashley Wright leading the team with two hits each. Davies and Lacie Tiller each added one.

The Burns softball team traveled to Union to take part in the Union Spring Bash March 31-April 1.

In the first game, Burns took down the host team, Union High School, 17-5.

Mattie Woodbury and Ayla Davies had a monster of a day, leading the Hilanders with four hits. Woodbury singled in the second, homered in the third, and singled in the sixth and seventh innings.

Medley, King, Cara Goss-Bodily, and Hallie Houck each had two hits in the game, with Medley hitting a home run in the seventh inning. Gracie Mello’s lone hit in the seventh inning cleared the fence for her first home run of the season.

Ashley Wright, Bobbi Berry, and Analeesa Thomas each finished with one hit.

Davies earned the win for the Hilanders, pitching four innings, allowing zero run and hits, while striking out 11 batters. Mackenzie King threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

In the second game of the day, Burns shut down Warrenton, 12-0, as Ayla Davies threw a complete game in five innings of work, only giving up one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Analeesa Thomas and Ashley Wright each hit a home run in the victory. Thomas’ came in the third inning, and Wright went deep in the fourth inning. Thomas also led the Hilanders, as she went three for three on the day.

Medley and Davies finished with two hits, while Woodbury, Mello, King, and Houck finished with one hit.

The Hilanders (4-0) will head to Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa (5-2) on Friday, April 7, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. Burns will then play Vale three days later on Monday, April 10. The game is scheduled in Burns with a 5 p.m. start.
