BHS volleyball headed to Eugene for state tournament

The Burns High School (BHS) volleyball team took down the Warrenton Warriors in three sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11, at home in the second round of the 2023 OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 3A Volleyball State Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Akylah Kaino led the Hilanders in a hard-fought game with 24 kills. Jocelyn Graham came in with 10 kills, while Danye Runnels had five, and Myah Rothwell finished with two.

Ashley Wright and Graham led the team with five aces each. Chloe Rothwell added three aces. Bailey Temple and Runnels had one apiece.

Wright led with two blocks, while Graham and Kaino had one each.

Kaino and Temple both finished with 11 digs apiece. C. Rothwell, Runnels, and Wright each had four. Graham finished with three digs, and M. Rothwell had one.

Wright had 34 of the team’s 38 assists, with C. Rothwell picking up two and Graham and Runnels each finishing with one.

The win puts Burns in a quarterfinal match-up against the No. 5 ranked Lewis & Clark League champion Valley Catholic (19-5, 12-0). The Valiants beat the Hilanders in the state championship game in 2022 in three sets.

The game is set for Friday morning, Nov. 3, at 8 a.m., at Springfield High School on court 2. If the Hilanders pull out the win, they’ll play Friday night at 6:30 p.m. They would play the winner of the Corbett/Sisters match.
