Softball falls to Prospectors 2-1

The Burns Hilander softball team lost a close game to 2A defending state champion Grant Union held in John Day on Thursday, March 21, 2-1.

The Hilanders struck first in the top of the second inning taking a 1-0 lead. The Prospectors

Ayla Davies threw all six innings, striking out 15 batters in the loss.

answered right back in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game 1-1. 

Grant Union was able to hold off the Hilanders and pick up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to ride out the 2-1 victory.

Head coach Robert Medley said after the game, “Exciting game with two really good teams going at it. Our girls are getting better every day and we are excited for the next five games as we get to see where we are before starting league.”

Gracie Mello led the girls going two for three at the plate. Ayla Davies, Cara Goss-Bodily and Jocelyn Graham each finished with one hit, with Goss-Bodily hitting a triple.

On the mound, Davies threw all six inning, striking out 16 batters and giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Burns is sitting at 2-2 to start off the season and heads to Bend High School where they’ll take on Dayton (2-1) on Wednesday, March 27. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. The girls will finish off the week with a trip to La Grande and Union to play in the Union Spring Bash Friday and Saturday, March 29-30.
