Valerie J. (Van Wey) Bennison 1943 – 2025

Valerie J. (Van Wey) Bennison, 82, of Burns, passed away Aug. 22, 2025, in the presence of both her children. She was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Eugene, to Valda and Donald Van Wey. On March 24, 1962, she married Gary Bennison.

Valerie lived a life defined by hard work, creativity and devotion to her loved ones. She was known for her strong work ethic, beginning with restaurant serving and management roles. Later, she and Gary owned and operated the Montgomery Wards Catalog Store in Burns. For years, Valerie was also a dedicated, successful Avon representative both in Burns and John Day. These occupations built lasting relationships in the community.

For the past few decades, Valerie found great joy and fulfillment in quilting projects. She created beautiful works of art, many of which were gifted to family members. These pieces reflected her patience, skill and eye for detail. She even won a few ribbons after entering several quilts into competitions.

Above all, Valerie was most proud of her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always interested in their lives and supportive of their accomplishments. She also treasured her weekly telephone conversations with her sister-in-law and brother-in-law of Missouri.

Valerie is survived by her daughter, Tonya Fox (Ron) of Burns; her son, Ted Bennison (Beth) of North Bend; granddaughter, Catherine Bennison (Rueben) of North Bend;  grandson, Jonathan Bennison (Katie) of Coos Bay; and sister-in-law, Nancy Ray (Garry) of Belton, Mo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Valerie was particularly excited to learn her first great-grandchild is coming in January, 2026, to Catherine and Rueben.

Valerie was preceded in death by her husband, Gary in 2020; sisters, Velma Schoonover and  Vivian Gaspar; and brothers, Denny Van Wey and Darrel Van Wey; and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, Valerie’s memory can be honored by donations to Home Health and Hospice of Harney County.

A graveside service for Valerie and Gary Bennison is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Burns Cemetery.
