On Saturday, Aug. 1, around 8 a.m., the Harney County Cattlewomen got a call that folks from Douglas County that they were headed to Harney County with pick-up trailers full of hay. The Harney County Cattlewomen thought the least they could do is send them back with lunch. 

Within 30 minutes and a few phone calls they had enough donation to make about 70 lunches; meat filled sandwiches, cookies, snacks, drinks and even ice cream bars! They also had plenty of volunteers to assemble them and deliver when they pulled in about 11 a.m.

There’s a video on the Harney County Cattlewomen’s Facebook page of all 15 trucks leaving and heading to Burns. The Douglas County crew were waving and smiling, happy to be helping out strangers here across the state.  

Rural America getting done. Strangers helping strangers, hundreds of miles away. As everyone talked while the hay was unloaded, some delivered directly to ranchers in need, they discovered many connections between Douglas County and Harney; common family and friends, old coworkers, rodeo friends/family.

This generous group of humans, some strangers themselves before today, got in their pick-ups and headed back, grateful to help. No longer strangers!
