Local students selected for music scholarships

Four local music students were awarded music scholarships at the Harney County Chamber Music Society Scholarship Recital on Feb. 17. Harpist Julia Welsh received the R.B. (Dick) Hoffman Scholarship, while Cyrus Mocan playing baritone saxophone was awarded the Darryl and Gail Womack and Dale and Valeria Eggleston Scholarship for middle school students. Pianist Jalee Chandler is the middle school alternate.

Christian Boyd on clarinet received the Sam Ellibee Scholarship, and Amelia Hamerlynck, mezzo soprano, secured a scholarship from the Zelley and Campbell Scholarship Fund in the high school division. Emily Bisbee, trumpet, is the high school alternate.

Students typically begin practicing recital pieces for auditions several months in advance of the competition. The audition consists of performing for a local and out-of-town adjudicator, plus an interview. The students then perform their recital pieces in concert for the public in the evening. The music was outstanding, and presented with poise by all the students.
