Burns improved to 6-0 on the season by defeating Umatilla 38-12 in Special District 3 football action on Friday, Oct. 5.

Burns took an early lead, scoring on their opening drive on a 46-yard run by Josh Reagle to go up 6-0.

The Hilanders then seemed to hit a lull, having to punt on their next two possessions.

With 5:05 left in the half, the Hilanders increased their lead to 14-0 with a 2-yard touchdown run by Reagle, and the two-point conversion pass from Mick Winn to Reagle.

Burns got the ball back at the Umatilla 30 after a failed punt attempt by the Vikings, and Winn scored on a 5-yard run to cap off the six-play drive. Reagle ran in the two-point conversion, and Burns took a 22-0 lead into halftime.

The Vikings cut the lead to 22-6 with just under seven minutes to go  in the third quarter, scoring on a 32-yard pass.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Hilanders’ Zane Taylor scooped up the ball at the 21-yard line and raced 79 yards down the right sideline for the score. Winn ran in the two-point conversion to put Burns up 30-6.

Umatilla answered back on their next possession, scoring on a 42-yard pass to make the score 30-12.

The final score of the night came with just 47 seconds left to play on a 42-yard pass from Winn to Taylor. Harlan Gunderson caught the two-point conversion pass from Winn for the final margin.

With a light rain falling most of the game, the Hilanders relied on their ground game for the majority of their offense.

Reagle rushed for 142 yards and two TDs on 20 carries, Winn  picked up 69 yards on 20 carries and scored once, and Cade Maupin ran twice for 54 yards.

Winn completed four of six passes for 97 yards and one touchdown.

The Burns defense held Umatilla to 68 yards rushing, but surrendered 226 yards through the air.
