The Crane football team exploded out of the gates, scoring 36 first-quarter points on its way to a 60-6 victory over Triad in the first round of the OSAA 1A state football playoffs.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 9-1 on the season, and will host Dufur (7-3, 4-1) at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Valentine Field.

Crane wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against the Timberwolves, as Chase Joyce scored on a 40-yard run with less than two minutes gone in the game to put Crane up 6-0.

Triad moved the ball into Crane territory on their first possession, but a fumble gave the ball back to the Mustangs at their own 30. After losing a yard on first down, the Mustangs took a 14-0 lead on a 71-yard run by Glen Starbuck and a two-point conversion run by Rixon Doman.

The Mustangs then upped their lead to 20-0 on a 61-yard punt return by Joyce with 4:28 left in the first quarter.

On Triad’s next possession, Crane’s Seth Doman intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. R. Doman ran in the two-point conversion, and the Mustangs led 28-0.

Another Triad punt gave Crane the ball at their own 41, and Riley Collins finished off a three-play drive with a 3-yard TD run. Jerret Doman added the two-point conversion to make it 36-0 in favor of Crane.

Joyce scored his third TD of the afternoon on a 4-yard run on Crane’s next possession, making it 42-0.

Crane then made it 48-0 on a 15-yard run by S. Doman, and a 17-yard TD pass from R. Doman to J. Doman gave Crane a 54-0 lead at halftime.

Because of the 45-point rule, the game went to a running clock for the entire second half. Triad fumbled on their first possession, giving the Mustangs a first down at the Timberwolves’ 48. Six plays later, Starbuck scored the Mustangs’ final TD of the game on a 20-yard run.

Triad finally got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff, as Ethan Roe fielded the ball and raced 79 yards for the touchdown.

Starbuck finished as the leading rusher for Crane, picking up 132 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns. Joyce added 104 yards and two scores on eight carries.

R. Dixon completed one of two passes for 17 yards and one TD.
