VETERAN Ulysses Grant Smith Junior 1944 – 2021

Ulysses Grant Smith Junior passed away February 15, 2021 at Riverbend Medical Center in Eugene. He was 76.

Junior was born September 16, 1944 in Sasser County, Ky., to Ulysses Grant Smith and Kitty Wombles-Smith. The family moved to Crane in 1951. Of all the places he lived he always loved Harney County the best and considered it home.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Lee Smith; parents, Ulysses and Kitty Smith; brothers, Troy, Keith, and Kenneth Smith; sisters, Kelen Flynn, Phyllis Knight, and Carolyn Goodman.

Junior is survived by his daughters, Lyssa Smith-Dionne of Ontario and Rachael Smith of Burns; Judy Keller (his companion of 50 years); step-children, Bill Keller and Cindy Keller-Dieckhoff of Eugene, and Philip Shannon of New Plymouth, Idaho. Two sisters, Beulah and Kenny Rossberg of Crane and Shirley Moore of Prineville; brother, Charles and Sherrie Smith of Ontario; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Junior was a veteran. He was a truck driver and spent most of his years driving truck in the Eugene area. He loved country music, especially George Jones, horse racing and telling funny sometimes corny jokes. He was a big Portland Trailblazers fan. He loved his family most of all and getting together with them was his happy time.

The time and place for his memorial service is pending.
