Scott Leaton Miles May 24, 1950 – July 6, 2022

Scott moved on to eternal rest July 6, 2022 in Missoula, Mont.  Scott’s parents were Joe and Bea Miles of Hines, surviving are his two sisters, Cordella and Madeline of Portland.

Scott came into our lives and made us very happy to be alive. He was “a good guy” who lived his life helping others along the way.  As a professional student, he attended Hines Grade School, Burns Union High School, University of Oregon, Oregon State, Eastern Oregon State College, San Diego State and Montana State.

He was active physically. He started riding bikes as a little kid, demanding his sister’s bike as his own. He continued riding throughout his life, taking his bike and trailer for an extensive ride around Australia, also a trip from Burns to Baja, Mexico via the desert Southwest. Scott used his bike around town for errands and several longer trips by himself or with friends. Scott lived in Flagstaff, Ariz., while in the area he backpacked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon over 20 times doing invasive plant removal and recreating.   In high school, as a Hilander, Scott was a good athlete in basketball and  football. Scott was also the instigator for the BUHS Class of 1968 to raise $50,000 by their 50th reunion.

He spent most of his adult life in Missoula, Mont., working on riparian projects as well as extensive time in Harney County working with various ranchers, the BLM and Forest Service improving their range lands within riparian areas.   In Missoula Scott spent time purchasing and managing commercial properties.

The family asks any donations in Scott’s memory be submitted to Harney County School District No. 3, the Native Plant Society of Montana or the charity of your choice.

A celebration of life will be held at the Burns Elks Lodge, 6:00 p.m. Aug. 20, 2022. Dinner will be provided, please call (541) 969-6503 or (541) 969-2491 to RSVP.
