Carol Jean Smith 1938 -2026 Obituary May 27, 2026May 27, 20260 Carol Jean (Herrin) Smith passed away Feb. 16, at her home in Coquille, Ore., with her family at her side. Carol was born Jan. 10, 1938 in Oroville, Wash., to Harold Freeman and Marjorie Francelia (Haase) Herrin. Carol married Bill in Lakeview, on Sept. 6, 1958. To the marriage was born two children, daughter, Zaneta and son, Kevin. The family moved to Burns in 1972 as Bill had taken a job managing the Farm Supply Store. Carol went to work for Harney County Planning and Road Depts in July of 1976 where she stayed until she retired in June of 1999. They moved from Burns to Coquille in 2001 as Bill wanted to live near the ocean. Carol enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for special occasions. She also liked to do crafts, knitting, crocheting and sewing. When they moved to Coquille she started to make quilts for family members. She also enjoyed gardening and canning what she grew. She also loved spending time with her family, grandsons and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Zaneta; son, Kevin; grandsons, Nathan, Nicholas, Nick and Gabriel; sisters, Billie, Lynn and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Ross; her parents, Harold and Marjorie Herrin; sister, Patricia Stowe; and nephews, Harold Sevey and Mike Powers. At her request, no funeral services will be held. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay. Donations in her memory may be made to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, or to a charity of one’s choice.
