Going for a hike and reading a good book are two beloved pass times. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do both at the same time? With Harney County Library’s StoryWalk, you can!

StoryWalk is a movement and literacy boosting project that places an illustrated children’s book — taken apart and displayed page-by-page — along a walking route in a community’s public space. In Harney County, you can find a StoryWalk in the library park on the west side of the building.

During a special Story Time last week, Miss Isy took the young readers out to the library park on a StoryWalk! They read Paddle Perch Climb — Bird Feet Are Neat, a book that was written and illustrated by Laurie Ellen Angus and installed along Harney County Library’s garden path.

After two years of virtual programming, Story Time is back in person at Harney County Library every Wednesday morning from 10:30 to 11. The program is geared toward toddlers through preschool. After listening to Miss Isy read a book, the children create a craft that’s related to the story.

Built this summer, the Harney County Library StoryWalk was made possible by generous donations to the HC Library Foundation from Portland Audubon Society, the Harney County Watershed Council, and the Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

Library staff said they are extremely grateful for these donations.
