From L-R: Who will find Jar 3? Will it be you? Visit the Chamber’s Facebook page for a clue! Sue Weathers discovered the first treasure jar near Idlewild Campground. Leslie Krabill stumbled upon the second jar while exploring Chickahominy Reservoir with her family. Cordelia Maxwell found Jar 2.5 at Chickahominy’s first campsite.

On May 8, the Harney County Chamber of Commerce — in collaboration with KZHC, Calamity Butte Guide Service, and local businesses — began hosting a treasure jar hunt.

The goal of the hunt is to encourage everyone to explore Harney County. Whether you’re discovering new areas or rediscovering places you haven’t visited in a while, the treasure hunt will inspire you to get out and smell the pine trees and sagebrush!

Sue Weathers discovered the first treasure jar on May 15. She found her treasure at the Devine Summit Trail head next to Idlewild Campground.

The same day, Leslie Krabill found the second treasure jar while spending time with her family at Chickahominy Reservoir. Krabill found the jar even before the Chamber shared any clues! The goal of this hunt is to encourage people to explore and enjoy Harney County, which is exactly what Krabill was doing.

However, the chamber decided to keep the fun going by hiding another jar at Chickahominy that week (Jar 2.5). Cordelia Maxwell found Jar 2.5 hidden next to the little tree at the first campsite, just to the right as you come into the campground.

Join the hunt

Do you want to get in on the action? Here are the basic rules of the hunt:

• Jars will only be hidden at campgrounds, trail heads, reservoirs, and public recreational places in Harney County.

• Treasure jars will not be placed in any place that you must climb or put yourself in danger to retrieve.

• A new treasure jar will be placed each week.

• If the previous week’s jar is not found, the Chamber will let you know. Multiple jars may be hidden at a time.

• Clues will be shared on the Harney Chamber Facebook page, Harney County website, and on the radio (92.7 FM and 99.1 FM) from 8-10 a.m.

• Be mindful of the environment when hunting.

• One treasure jar per household, per year. Spread the love!

If you find the treasure jar, bring it in to the Harney County Chamber to receive your gift certificate from the business sponsor of the week.

Thank you to Grocery Outlet for sponsoring this week’s jar. Be sure to check out their specials and wide variety of plants!

You may keep the jar or turn it in to be recycled.

Do you want to find all the treasure jars, even though you can’t claim all of the prizes?

Take a selfie next to each of the jars. (Please don’t move the jars, so someone else can find them.) Send the pictures with your name and phone number to director@harneycounty.com, for a chance to win a drawing for a $200 Shop Harney gift card.

The person/family who takes a picture with the most jars will win the gift card. A drawing will be held in the event of a tie.

Contact the Harney County Chamber of Commerce at 541 573-2636 if you have any questions about the treasure hunt. Good luck!
